JPEG compression can dramatically reduce the file size of photographic images compared to PNG. Converting a PNG to JPG is useful when you need to reduce file size for sharing, email, or web upload, and when the image does not contain transparency. Since JPEG does not support transparency, transparent areas in the source PNG will be filled with a white background in the output. Dockitt performs the conversion entirely in your browser using the Canvas API.

How to use

  1. Click 'Choose PNG' and select the PNG image you want to convert.
  2. Click 'Convert to JPG' and wait while the image is processed in your browser.
  3. Download the JPG file.

FAQ

Will I lose quality when converting PNG to JPG?

Yes. JPEG uses lossy compression, which means some image detail is discarded to achieve smaller file sizes. The amount of quality loss depends on the complexity of the image. For photographic content, the quality loss at high settings is usually imperceptible. For images with sharp edges, text, diagrams, or flat colours, JPEG compression introduces visible artefacts around edges.

What happens to transparent areas in my PNG?

JPEG does not support transparency. Any transparent pixels in the source PNG will be filled with a white background in the JPEG output. If your PNG has transparency that you need to preserve, convert to WebP instead, which supports both transparency and compression.

Why is the JPG file smaller than the original PNG?

JPEG uses lossy compression, which discards data the human eye is less likely to notice. PNG uses lossless compression, which preserves every pixel. For photographic content, JPEG can typically reduce file size by 70–90% compared to PNG at comparable visual quality.

When should I keep the PNG format instead of converting?

Keep PNG when the image contains transparency that must be preserved, when the image contains sharp text or line art where JPEG artefacts would be visible, or when the image will be edited and re-saved multiple times (PNG avoids generational quality loss). Convert to JPG when sharing photographic content where file size matters.

Can I convert multiple PNGs at once?

This tool converts one file at a time. Repeat the process for each file you want to convert.

Is the conversion done in my browser or on a server?

The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded to any server.
