Why convert HEIC to PNG instead of JPG?

PNG is lossless — no quality is lost in the conversion beyond what was already lost when the original HEIC was captured. JPG introduces additional lossy compression. Convert to PNG when you need to edit the image further without quality degradation, or when the receiving application requires lossless input.

Will the PNG be much larger than the HEIC?

Yes. HEIC uses very efficient compression (similar to H.265 video compression). PNG uses lossless compression which is less space-efficient for photographic content. A typical iPhone photo of a few MB in HEIC format may produce a PNG of 10–30MB.

Is the conversion done in my browser or on a server?
