GIF files can be large for photographic or detailed content. Converting a GIF to JPG applies JPEG compression, which significantly reduces file size. Note that only the first frame of an animated GIF is rendered in the output — animated frames are not preserved. Transparent areas in the GIF are filled with a white background since JPEG does not support transparency. Dockitt performs the conversion entirely in your browser.

How to use

  1. Click 'Choose GIF' and select the GIF image you want to convert.
  2. Click 'Convert to JPG' and wait while the image is processed in your browser.
  3. Download the JPG file.

FAQ

What happens to animated GIFs?

Only the first frame of an animated GIF is captured and converted to JPEG. The animation is not preserved in the output. If you need to keep the animation, consider converting to WebP which supports both animation and better compression.

What happens to transparent areas in the GIF?

JPEG does not support transparency. Transparent pixels in the source GIF are filled with a white background in the JPEG output.

Why is the JPG smaller than the GIF?

JPEG uses efficient lossy compression designed for photographic content, which typically produces much smaller files than GIF. GIF is limited to 256 colours and uses a less efficient compression algorithm.

Is the conversion done in my browser or on a server?

The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded to any server.
