WebP provides excellent compression for both photographic and graphical content, making it one of the best replacements for BMP in web and digital workflows. Converting a BMP to WebP can reduce file size by over 90% compared to the uncompressed original while maintaining high visual quality. WebP is supported by all modern browsers and an increasing number of desktop applications. Dockitt converts BMP to WebP entirely in your browser using the Canvas API.

FAQ

How much smaller will the WebP be compared to the BMP?

WebP compression can reduce BMP file size by 90% or more, depending on image content. A 10MB BMP might produce a WebP of 200–500KB at high quality. For photographic images the savings are greatest; for images with many fine details or patterns the savings are still significant but may be smaller.

Is WebP supported everywhere I need to use the image?

WebP is supported by all modern web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 14+, Edge) and increasingly by desktop applications. If you need maximum compatibility with older software, convert to PNG or JPG instead. For web delivery, WebP is an excellent choice due to its smaller file sizes.

Will there be quality loss compared to the original BMP?

This tool uses a high-quality WebP setting. For most images, the WebP output will be visually indistinguishable from the source BMP. Minor differences at pixel level may exist in areas of fine detail, but for practical use the quality is preserved.

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes. WebP supports full alpha channel transparency. If the source BMP has transparent pixels (via the canvas rendering), they will be represented in the WebP output.

Is WebP a good format for storing photos long-term?

WebP is suitable for web delivery and general digital storage. For long-term archival, lossless formats like PNG or TIFF are generally preferred because they preserve every pixel exactly. WebP in lossy mode discards some image data, which is fine for display purposes but not ideal for archival copies.

Is the conversion done in my browser or on a server?

The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is never uploaded to any server.
